School rankings
Methodology and coverage
What we have checked, what we have not, and the rules we follow.
These tables compare results in specified Portuguese assessments, not overall school quality. Schools with different curricula, too few eligible exams or unavailable data may not appear. A school's absence is not a poor result.
Where we stand
We have collected a lot of official data, but not yet a complete, checked set of school-level exam results for any single year. So we are not publishing a ranking yet. We would rather show the gaps than fill them in.
Sources and what we hold
InfoEscolas official school-data exports
Collected: 53 files, covering school-year labels from 2009/10 to 2023/24
Pupils, retention, completion, success and context. Not exam rankings. Not every measure exists for every year.
Official national exam reports (DGEEC)
Collected: the 2024 and 2025 reports
National and regional context. Not school-by-school tables.
Official national exam archives (JNE)
Listed, not yet used
Secondary archives listed for 2008 to 2024; 9th-year archives for 2008 to 2019 and 2022 to 2025. Each file still needs to be checked for what it contains and may be used for.
Renascença 2016 edition
Collected, research only
About 2,800 table rows. No reuse permission found, so it is not published.
Observador (2025 edition)
Read the method only
No data copied and no reusable download found. We link to it.
The InfoEscolas data is published by the Ministry of Education under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence on dados.gov.pt. We will credit it wherever we use it.
Our rules
- The year shown is the year of the exams. The date a table was published is shown separately.
- Unknown or hidden values show as "Not available", never as zero and never as last place.
- A national rank is the rank the publisher gave. A filter by town never changes it. If we ever calculate a local position, we will label it as ours and say how ties are handled.
- Sorting A to Z is not a ranking.
- Different publishers and different measures are shown separately. We never mix them into one score.
- Exam results and "how a school does for its context" are different measures and stay apart.
- Basic and secondary results are on different scales and are never put in one table.
- We do not reconstruct a publisher's rank from rounded averages.
- Schools whose results cover fewer exams than a source requires may not appear. That is not a verdict.
- We show no pupil names, identifiers or tiny groups.
Still open
- Which official school-level exam files we can use and republish, and for which years.
- The exact minimum number of exams each source requires. Observador describes two different minimums, so we will not copy one silently.
- Years with rule changes: in 2025 the secondary exam became compulsory across courses, and the 4th and 6th-year tests started. Averages across those years are not like for like.
- A reviewed link between each result and our school profiles, using official school codes.
Paid partners
Featured partner status is paid for. It never affects whether a school appears, how it is filtered, or where it sits in any result.
